From Dairy Barns to Club Calves: My Conversation with Dad About Building a Beef Legacy
Sep 16, 2025
This episode of the Rooted Agritourism podcast is an extra special one—because I got to sit down with my dad, JT Weber, and talk about something that runs deep in our family: raising cattle, building value into agriculture, and the lessons we've learned along the way.
A Family Farm That’s Always Evolving
Our family's story started in the dairy barn. I grew up surrounded by cattle, early mornings, and the kind of hard work that only farming teaches you. Over time, though, our operation evolved. Today, my brothers are heavily involved in the opperation and the focus is on Angus and Sim Angus genetics, raising cattle not just for beef, but for show-quality animals. It's a transformation rooted in a love for livestock and a vision for long-term sustainability.
Dad has always been passionate about breeding the right kind of animal—paying attention to skeletal width, muscle shape, and overall structure. In this episode, he shares exactly what he looks for in club calves and why those traits matter, not just in the show ring but for performance and longevity.
From SDSU to the Sale Ring
One of the things I admire most about Dad is how he’s never stopped learning. From his time at South Dakota State University to traveling the country as a cattle buyer and auctioneer, he's always chased excellence. His stories in this episode reflect decades of experience—and more than a few lessons learned the hard way.
We also talk about challenges that many farmers can relate to: how drought conditions can shape our herd decisions, the pressures of pricing, and the ongoing debate between grass-fed and grain-fed beef. Spoiler alert: Dad has opinions, and they’re rooted in both science and firsthand experience.
Why Agritourism Matters
One thing that makes my family's operation different is how we approach agritourism. We believe in pulling back the curtain and helping people understand what it really takes to raise high-quality beef. Whether it’s buyers visiting the farm or families coming out for events, connecting directly with the customers is one of the most fulfilling parts of what we do.
It’s not just about selling a product—it’s about building relationships and sharing our passion for agriculture.
Business, But Make It Personal
At the heart of it all is family. This business wouldn’t exist without the countless hours, shared meals, and yes—some heated barn conversations—that come with working alongside your loved ones. Dad’s perspective in this episode reminds me how lucky we are to be able to build something as a family.
If you're curious about the beef industry, thinking about ways to add value to your own farm, or just love a good family story—this episode is for you.
Listen now and hear how our family turned a passion for livestock into a mission-driven business that’s as much about people as it is about cattle.
