Selling Extra Flowers Without Slashing Prices—My Favorite Strategies That Actually Work

Jul 29, 2025

Let’s be honest: extra flowers happen. Whether it's a bumper crop or a slow sales week, every flower farmer eventually ends up with more blooms than they know what to do with. I’ve been there, and over the years, I’ve figured out some simple but powerful strategies to move those flowers without slashing prices or scrambling at the last minute.

The biggest game-changer for me? Planning with intention. That means growing with a clear sales calendar in mind. If you know when your peak sales periods are—Mother’s Day, wedding season, market days—you can time your planting and harvesting to match. This helps cut down on excess before it even becomes a problem.

Another lifesaver is pre-selling. When customers commit to flowers before they’re even cut, I can harvest with confidence, knowing exactly where those blooms are going. It’s one of the best ways to protect your time, your energy, and your bottom line.

Now, even with the best planning, you’ll still occasionally find yourself with a surplus. That’s when it’s time to get creative.

One of my go-to tactics is partnering with local businesses—think cafés, yoga studios, or boutiques. These spots can showcase your flowers, help you tap into new audiences, and create a local buzz around your brand.

And don’t underestimate the power of a QR code. Seriously. Pop one on your bouquet tags, linking directly to your email sign-up or social media. It turns every bouquet into a marketing tool—and helps grow your list while you grow your flowers.

Here’s something I feel strongly about: don’t discount your flowers just to move them. When you lower prices, you’re not just cutting into profits—you risk attracting bargain hunters who don’t truly value your work. And worse, you might start training your audience to expect lower prices from you in the future.

Instead, think about value-added marketing. Could you donate some blooms to a local nursing home? It spreads joy and gets your name out in the community. Or try a giveaway on Instagram. Ask people to sign up for your email list to enter. It’s a great way to grow your audience and clear some inventory in the process.

I also love working with photographers on styled shoots. You get gorgeous content, they get flowers, and your blooms live on in beautiful images that help promote your brand long after the petals are gone.

At the end of the day, this business isn’t just about selling flowers—it’s about building a brand, nurturing a community, and making smart, sustainable decisions. Don’t be afraid to think outside the vase when it comes to selling your surplus. With the right tools and mindset, every stem can find a home.
